When I was a kid in Houston in the 1990’s Houston already had over 20 mosques. The halal food scene focused on South Asian cuisine and Middle Eastern cuisine within the famous Hillcroft district. But asides from that, Muslim culture in Houston was still quiet. Fast forward 20 years later, Houston became a city of over 150 mosques. One mosque available in the greater city suburbs is just a five-minute drive from your home. And as the years progressed, the halal food scene exploded! Over 100 halal food establishments, today exist in Houston. And it’s not your typical perception of halal food, thinking it’s lamb over rice or shawarma. I’m talking about authentic Tacos, Filipino foods, Nashville-style hot chicken, Pho, Hibachi. You name it, Houston has it! And even fusion flavors that are all halal.
During this period, Houston had always been an affordable city to immigrants hence why Muslims loved coming to the city. Affordable housing, a vibrant community, access to good universities in the state, and a very robust economy in the energy and medical industry. Houston was simply an oasis for immigrants new to America, both educated and not too much. A house just ten years ago in Houston was about $175K. A very low number compared to the rest of the country.
When I left Houston to begin my career, I lived in a town with only one mosque and two halal establishments. The living adjustment took a long time. The Muslim community was intimate, in fact, one of the best I’ve ever experienced! But there was a lack of diverse backgrounds. Everyone worked for the same company or a Hospital. Weekend food outings often meant a two-hour road trip to Detroit since that was the closest city with many halal options. Eventually, at the end of my work assignment, I relocated to large cities with a diverse halal and Muslim community scene — New York City and San Francisco.
The problem with these cities, however, was they were absurdly expensive! By the time my wife and I wanted to purchase a home, a home in the bay area was well over $1M. Our zip code had an average price tag of over $2.5M! We felt it was impossible to live in an affordable house with a sizeable Muslim community unless we moved back to Texas, famous for its large mosques, halal food scene, and scholars.
When the pandemic hit, thousands of young folks, including Muslims, decided to move elsewhere. Often to be closer to their family and in the affordable suburbs. Millions of people purchased homes during the pandemic, and with the rise of remote work being more accepted, access to affordable housing is better than ever. My wife and I are even part of this trend, and we are in the process of leaving the Bay Area and moving to another city where the homes are more affordable with a respectable Muslim community.
As we searched for the correct city, many criteria were in consideration. But some of them included access to halal food, Islamic centers for building a community, Sunday schools, and more. To my surprise, America has so many options now for Muslims to live in cities with a rich Muslim presence. The mosques are so architecturally beautiful across the country that one would even think they are in traditional Muslim countries. The halal food scene in some of these cities is so diverse that you can cover chicken and waffles for breakfast, tacos for lunch, and delicious Burmese food for dinner in one day. And to my surprise, so many Muslim-friendly cities are affordable! How affordable do you say? Well, I would say below $400K, there are more than 50 cities in America with a tremendous Muslim scene. As you can imagine, many Muslims live in costly parts of the country, such as New York and California….But the majority live in these cities where this is a vibrant community!
Below is the list that I have created. This data reflects information for 2022. The cities that made this list had to meet a rigorous qualification test to be deemed friendly for Muslims:
- The city must have at least 20 halal or partially halal restaurants.
- The city must have at least eight mosques in its 25-mile radius.
- The city has at least one Islamic school available.
- A price point below $400K for families to pay for in this new remote era.
So here it is — your opportunity to find and move to a Muslim-friendly city.
1. Houston, TX Area
This may seem a little biased since Houston is my hometown. But I have to say, Houston is the best halal-friendly city in America! That may seem like a bold statement, but I am convinced of it. One would think the NYC area is, but if you’re looking for a complete global flavor and fusion combinations, Houston is, without a doubt, the best. You can even get Michelin-style experiences in this city with halal options. The city has unique Muslim history. With Engineers and Medicine running so much of the city, Muslims play a prominent role in those industries. The greater city area is also home to a whopping 200 plus mosques and close to 100,000 Muslims. Some of the most famous food neighborhoods are Hillcroft and the Sugar Land suburb, which have the greatest halal food concentration in the city. Houston is very friendly to immigrants, and I am proud to call it my hometown.

2. Dallas / Fort Worth, TX Area
As Texans say, everything is bigger in Texas. The Dallas Fort Worth metroplex is home to over 50 mosques and a growing halal food scene. This area is very special for Muslims in America because it’s home to some of the most well-known Islamic scholars and Muslim educational institutions. Home to leaders like Omar Suleiman, AbdulNasir Jangda, and more, the city has attracted thousands of Muslims to make this city home. The city is well known for its Bayyinah Arabic intensive, Qalam Institute, and Yaqeen Institute. The area has a rich and diverse economy for job seekers, and the homes here are often much newer than the rest of the country for a competitive space value.

3. Chicago, IL Area
It should be of no surprise that Chicago is on our top list. The city has a rich history of Muslim culture. More than 400,000 Muslims live in the greater area! Chicago has a tremendous and diverse economy for job seekers. The city has one of the largest concentrations of halal food options in the nation and mosques. Devon street is famous for Pakistani and Indian food. The Chicago Lawn neighborhood is renowned for its Arab community as well. The area is undoubtedly more expensive than other parts of the country. However, a modest small size home in certain suburbs is possible in Chicago.

Atlanta is home to over 75,000 Muslims, making it one of America’s most concentrated Muslim cities. The city is also home to a great halal food scene. The city of Atlanta has gone through a significant boom in the last 15 years, and home prices here have certainly grown too but are still reasonably attainable compared to other areas.

5. Detroit, MI Area
Detroit has one of the oldest histories of Muslims in America. The city built its first mosque nearly 100 year years ago. Over the years, Detroit has become home to a large Arab community. Particularly in the Wayne County area. Detroit is experiencing a changing economy, so jobs are continuing to grow. Tech startups are also emerging here, and one of them is LaunchGood, a crowdfunding platform for Muslims. Detroit today has Muslims from all ethnic backgrounds and a rich halal food scene. Islamic schools are abundant in this city and even offer Montessori schools focused on an Islamic curriculum.

6. Minneapolis, MN Area
The greater Minneapolis area is home to over 100,000 Muslims! Minneapolis is well known to be a city with the largest Somalian population outside of Somalia. Many of the Muslims in Minneapolis are of Somalian background. The city is also known for Muslim politicians playing a pivotal role in America. Ilhan Omar and Keith Ellison as of the most well-known ones. The city has a well-rounded economy for jobs and has a modest price range of home prices averaging in the $300’s.

8. Newark, NJ
Newark is an option on the Jersey side for those who want to stay close to the New York City Area and the city’s jobs. The PATH train will direct you straight to Manhattan, making it a reasonable commute. Newark is home to many African American Muslims, and North New Jersey, in general, is home to several thousand Muslims, including Pakistani, Middle Eastern, and Turkish. The home values are more reasonably priced compared to the city, Queens and Long Island. New Jersey has a very active Muslim community with several suburbs to choose from and a budget that may work for what you are looking for.

9. Paterson, NJ
Paterson is home to one of the largest Muslim populations as a percentage for a city in America. Not too far from Newark, Paterson is located in northern New Jersey and is a great city to choose if you have work in the North Jersey area or are willing to take a Bus commute to NYC (Over 90 minutes with traffic). Paterson is home to a large South Asian community, Middle Eastern Community, Turkish and Bosnian community. The town has several halal food choices in the area and a very active Muslim Mosque community. At a price point around $400K, it’s definitely on the high side but a practical town to choose if you need to commute only a few times a week. Paterson is also a great town to select as a home if you are looking for great school districts.

Not too far away from Philadelphia is Trenton, NJ. As the capital of New Jersey, the city is home primarily to government roles. The Muslim population here is very abundant. Very close to Trenton is Princeton University. An excellent option for those who wish to work near there and consider the fair home prices in Trenton.

Out of my top 50 list, Columbus is certainly one of the most exciting options. Ohio, in general, has an excellent economy, a vast Muslim presence of more than 200,000 in the state, and a great economy, especially in its three most prominent cities. Columbus is a very affordable city, home to well-known universities, and you can even construct new homes in the area as home plots are still available. Columbus is also a fun food city, so I’m not surprised by how many halal food options are available here. Definitely, a city to consider!

13. Baltimore, MD Area
An estimated 40,000 Muslims live in the Baltimore/ Washington D.C. area. While D.C. is an expensive area, Baltimore offers a much more affordable option for Muslim families and a vast option of halal food and mosques. While the city has been experiencing a declining economy, many tech companies are setting up offices in Baltimore, making it an attractive affordable option. Medicine is also very famous here as John Hopkins is nearby. Baltimore offers excellent private Muslim school options and even has an Islamic Montessori school called Aya Montessori.

There are likely over 15,000 Muslims here, so the availability of halal food and Mosques is relatively good. North Carolina has a growing population with plenty of land available, so having new homes is an attractive option. The city is also home to many government jobs at the state and federal levels. Harrisburg was once ranked one of the best cities for families due to its affordability. It is also considered one of the few cities in the United States regarded for being recession-proof.

In my top 50 list, Toledo, Ohio, is the most affordable city for Muslims in America. In fact, I was stunned to find a city in America where the average home price is well below $200K, and you can get a beautiful home for below $150K in Toledo! Toledo is famous for being America’s Glass city as Glass manufacturing is well known here. The Islamic Center of Greater Toledo is regarded as one of America’s most beautiful mosques.

Allentown is also home to a growing community around the Islamic seminary Al Maqasid, founded by Shaykh Yahya Rhodus.

For Muslims, the town has many mosques and halal options and offers a competitive price point.

Fort Wayne is Indiana’s second-biggest city after Indianapolis. The city has been recognized as one of America’s top cities to raise a family due to its extensive park system and affordable housing. While technically not part of this list’s criteria bar, I believe the Muslim community in Fort Wayne is growing, and it’s only a matter of time that the city will have more halal options and mosques. The city is home to many refugee populations like Afghan and Burmese Muslims.

47. Stockton, CA Area
California represents a staggering 12% of the U.S. population today for 1 out of the 50 states. It would be a shame if my report didn’t include cities in California for Muslims since many wish to live in this state and several thousands of Muslims call California home, including my wife and I. As you would imagine, California is very expensive. There aren’t cities with a price point below $400K with a sizeable Muslim population. However, the city of Stockton is the most affordable for a Muslim community. Stockton is about 50 miles south of Sacramento and is home, and the greater area is home to a good number of mosques and a fair number of halal food options. At a price range between $400K — $450K, it is undoubtedly one of the more affordable cities in California compared to other cities that have a price point higher than $800K.

48. Sacramento, CA Area
If a city deserves high praise for being an affordable city in California and an excellent community for Muslims, it’s Sacramento. I recently visited Sacramento, and I can’t say enough how surprised I was with this city. The Muslim community is extensive here at over 75,000 in the greater city area. There are several halal options, from hot chicken sandwiches to traditional Afghan cuisine. The home prices are above $450K, but a modest-sized home in this city can be from $450K — $500K. Sacramento is home to government roles and healthcare positions; however, I can’t recommend Sacramento enough for those who want to be close to the Bay Area and work remotely. It’s genuinely a great affordable city for Californians, and the option to build new homes here is still an option compared to other parts of the state. The Muslims of this city are very active in their community and are home to several ethnic groups to make friends from all various backgrounds.

If we are going to break from our affordable budget range definition and sneak a little above it, I can’t miss Miami, Florida. Miami is America’s gem as a beautiful city with a vibrant Hispanic culture. It is regarded as one of the most recognized global cities after New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and so naturally, there is a large Muslim community here in this city. There are plenty of Islamic school choices in the area and several dozens of Halal food options to choose from. The city is known for being a great city for jobs with a strong economy, and if you’re looking for great beach vibes, this is certainly a great choice to consider if you’re willing to stretch the budget a bit.

50. Austin, TX Area
I’m going to be honest here. Austin is a very selfish and shameless post from me. Because the truth is, Austin is now costly compared to other cities in America. Austin is today in the same expensive category range as other cities like Denver, Salt Lake City, Portland, and Seattle. However, compared to those other cities, I will share that Austin is home to many Muslims. The city has over 13 mosques and a large number of halal options. The city is known for its food trucks, and there are several halal food trucks in this city, from halal chicken sandwiches to halal texas bbq. Austin is a choice for those in the tech industry. As you can guess, companies and folks from California and New York moving to the Texas capital have ballooned the real estate prices. Nevertheless, it’s a beautiful city to consider home and home to several thousands of Muslims.
